Should your startup buy .com, .io, or .ai in 2026?

Real conversion-rate data on .com vs .io vs .ai across cold traffic, plus when each TLD is the right call.

Founders ask this question weekly and most of the answers online are eight years old. Here is the 2026 picture.

.com still wins cold traffic. Verisign's 2024 navigational study showed .com gets 1.4 to 1.8 times the click-through of .io on cold inbound traffic from search results, and 2.1 times the CTR of .xyz. The gap shrinks but does not disappear when the audience is technical. Your developer-tool users will type .io if they are already trying to find you. Your blog readers will not.

.io is fine for developer tools, fine for B2B early stage, risky everywhere else. The .io extension reads as "infrastructure" or "indie tech" to engineers and as "I'm not sure" to everyone else. If your users are engineers and your sales motion is bottom-up adoption, .io is acceptable. If you have a B2C product or a large-account sales motion, .com is worth two to five times the price tag.

.ai is the strongest non-.com TLD in 2026, but only for AI-first brands. The premium runs $80 to $200 per year for unrestricted .ai domains, more for premium names. The TLD belongs to Anguilla, which has tightened registration rules in 2025, so verify your registrar handles renewals. .ai for an HR SaaS that happens to use AI in one feature reads as a marketing bolt-on; .ai for an AI-native product reads as conviction.

When to skip .com despite all of the above. (1) The .com is taken by an active business in your category and the asking price is over six figures. Burning $300K of pre-PMF runway on a domain is a cost you usually cannot recover. (2) The .com owner is a domain investor with a $500K asking price and the same name in a fresh form is available. Stripe could not get .com initially and shipped on stripe.com after a re-acquisition. (3) Your category is so technical that .com would dilute the brand. if you sell a Rust crate, crates.io is correct.

Strategy when the .com is taken. Three options that cost less than buying out the holder. Add a modifier: getstripe.com, usestripe.com, stripeapp.com. Use a related TLD: stripe.io, stripe.dev, stripe.so. Or pick a different name. The third option is often the right one. names exist in surplus, and a great alternative name is cheaper than a mediocre alternative TLD.

A note on .com renewal cost. ICANN allows registries to raise wholesale .com pricing periodically. The 2026 wholesale price is around $11. Retail at most registrars sits at $11 to $15. If a registrar quotes you $25 to $50 for a non-premium .com renewal, change registrars.

The bottom line: .com unless you have a reason. Have a reason ready.
